Melynda made her way up to the library from the Hufflepuff common room. As she did so, she couldn't help but glance down at the shiny badge that adorned her chest. She'd been so shocked this summer to learn that she'd been named a Hufflepuff Prefect. Even now, almost a month later, she would still randomly burst into a big grin simply from the memory of that day. Her parents had been so proud and her brother, Harmon, had been quite jealous. Mel couldn't stop the smug little smile that settled on her lips. It was only there for a moment, but in it, one could read exactly how she and her brother felt toward each other. They were polar opposites, really. She was friendly enough, if a little shy, and he was always rather anal about everything and almost never loosened up, even around his family. Mindy much preferred the company of her younger brothers here at Hogwarts; Chris and JT. Chris was, without a doubt, her favorite sibling of the eight she had, and JT was a really sweet boy as well. She wasn't looking forward to the year when the twins would enter school at all. They were far too self-centered to appeal to Mindy's honey-sweet nature.
The Hufflepuff Prefect (oh, how wonderful that title sounded in her mind!) entered the library and went over to some of the shelves. She wasn't looking for anything in particular really, just something to keep her occupied and interested until she got assigned some real homework. Since it was so early in the school year, most of the classes had not yet begun.
She tucked a strand of copper hair behind one ear as she perused the expanse of books in front of her. Where on earth to start? There were so many interesting books hidden in this room that it was like diving for treasure in some shallow sea. She pulled a few off of the shelf to get a better look at them. Finally deciding to go with one entitled The Secrets of the Animagus, she stood looking at it for a while. She'd considered studying that very thing as she'd always loved creatures of almost any sort. However, she'd decided to focus on her more pressing studies at the time. And this, her fifth year, would be no better she knew. For this year was O.W.L.s year. She would have been lying if she'd said that O.W.L.s didn't frighten her. Mindy was plenty nervous for these important tests which would determine whether or not she could pursue the dream career of her choice: a healer.
