Before you create a character for this RPG, make sure that you have read the following rules.
1. I know this rule has been repeated over and over in countless RPG boards, but I am a firm believer of this --- ABSOLUTELY NO MARY SUE'S OR GARY STU'S. Make your character as realistic as possible. We're not really looking for characters with innumerable flaws and that are horrendously ugly, but we also do not want someone who is all-powerful and possesses godly beauty and grace. Even the Dark Lord, who is undoubtedly more powerful than your character (unless you play the Dark Lord himself), has flaws.
2. Now, role-players have been complaining about Mary Sue’s, saying that they hate Mary Sue’s and that they will never ever make a Mary Sue character. However, many of these role-players create characters that are revoltingly over-the-top emo. Or Goth. Or belong to some other 'freak' subculture that isn't even supposed to exist in the Wizarding world. PLEASE do not come here applying as a student who slits their wrists or performs other forms of self mutilation. There are a few exceptional cases, but not everyone can be a wrist-slashing 'freak' who wears dark make-up and corsets. And Wizards do not have skateboards. Please. Seriously.
You should know, I have nothing against these people, for I have been labeled a freak myself. But we have to be a tad bit realistic here. No matter how fictional Hogwarts is, it is highly unlikely for them to have a student who is 'hopelessly downtrodden and driven to utter depression by a cruel world and thus turns to wrist-slashing and self mutilation'. I will seriously deny your application if you even try.
3. Details, details, details. Yes, we love it. We want to know as much as you can tell us about your character. A well-developed character even during application period will make role-playing a lot easier. Take the minimum word-count requirements seriously. If we say 200 words, that means 200 or more. Otherwise, we will hate your application and deny it immediately. No, just kidding. We'll give you time to work on it.
4. Choose appropriate celebrities. If you're going to play a first year, you may not use someone like Chad Michael Murray or Sophia Bush as your celebrity avatar. That's just... stupid. Pick someone who actually looks like a first year. Same thing goes for every other year and age. If your character is 35 years old, you cannot have JoJo as your celebrity. Be realistic. Here are the corresponding ages for Hogwarts students:
First Years - 11, 12 Second Years - 12, 13 Third Years - 13, 14 Fourth Years - 14, 15 Fifth Years - 15, 16 Sixth Years - 16, 17 Seventh Years - 17, 18
And it is highly unlikely for an 18-year-old fresh Hogwarts graduate to be a Professor. We are imposing a minimum age of 25 for Hogwarts Professors.
5. No canon characters. This is an Alternate Universe RPG. Many of the events that took place in the books did not take place here at all (Except for the founding of Hogwarts, The Order of The Phoenix, and The Death Eaters! How curious!). You may use the first name OR the last name of a canon character but never both.
GOOD: Character Name: Harry Hasselhoff
BAD: Character Name: Viktor Krum
6. Is my character allowed to wear Muggle clothing? Uhh... they're alright, but going to the extent of wearing designer outfits like Dolce & Gabbana or even brands like Hot Topic is just way out there. Wizards have their own clothing stores for a reason. And the probability of a pureblood Wizard sporting an Armani suit is 0.0021%. Like in the books, the Weasley children wear Muggle clothes, and so does Hermione (she's Muggleborn, durrr...), but Muggle fashion is the least of their priorities. If you want your Witch or Wizard character to be fashionably trendy, have them wear designer Witch or Wizard clothes.
7. All special abilities applications are under the Special Abilities boards. A character with a special ability may be one of the following: Occlumens, Legilimens, Metamorphagus, Animagus, Parselmouth, or Seer. In these boards, Werewolves are also Wizards with special abilities.
8. You may have a maximum of FIVE characters. But, please, keep them active, and give them FIVE different accounts. We may allow a 6th and a 7th if you prove yourself capable of handling multiple characters. (updated: 10/19/2008)
9. Your character can be one of the following:
Student - At Hogwarts, of course. You may choose what year they are in, but you may not choose their House.
Adult - Basically, adults are the ones who will be taking the jobs around the RPG world. If you apply for an adult character, they can become a shop owner or employee, a Hogwarts staff member, a Ministry worker, or even a Healer at St. Mungo's.
Other - Characters that do not fall under student or adult are categorized as 'other'. Goblins, centaurs, and any creature bearing the characteristics of 'being' (read this for an idea of what 'beings' are like) are 'other' characters.
Children who are younger than the required age to enter Hogwarts and Muggles are also 'other' characters.
10. Modify your display name to your character's first and last name. Thanks.
11. Character sigs are not required, but it's a lot better if you have them. It will be easier for fellow role-players to picture your character during a scene. In line with this, we are imposing a maximum signature image size of 500 x 400 (width x height). If your signature stretches the boards, the admin will remove or modify it.
